How I See
A quiet note on the way I photograph, and what I am always looking for.
You asked about my style. The most honest way I know to answer is to tell you what I love, because that is what I am always moving toward with a camera in my hands. If these are the things that move you too, I think we would make something beautiful together.
Presence
In the moment, together
When I photograph people, the way I most love to work is when the two of you are simply in the moment: relaxed, with the people you love, having a good time. A wedding is a lively day, always moving, and it feels like we are all in it together.
The two of you are present with each other, caught up in your own day, and I am right there in it beside you, keeping pace with each moment as it comes. I lead quietly when a moment asks for it, stepping in to find the softest light or a better angle, and then I step back so the day stays yours. That is what makes the photographs feel so natural. You were present, and so was I.
It is the two of you,
and I am just in it.
Place
What the place gives
I like to build a photograph from whatever the day naturally offers. If I were a chef, I would want to cook with what is in season, and it is the same instinct with a camera.
You chose this place and every detail in it, and I use them to strengthen the sense of where you are: the venue you fell for, the flowers and the decor, the landscaping and the trees, and around it all, the sea and the green and the warm tropical color that belongs to this stretch of Belize. I fold those things in on purpose. The setting lives inside the photograph with you, so your images look like your exact place, your venue, your people, and nowhere else.
If I were a chef, I would cook
with what is in season.
Light
The special ingredient
Light is my special ingredient. It gives a photograph its color and its luminance, and it draws the shadow that gives a face and a place their dimension. If I am good at anything, it is reading that light and using it to make images that are flattering and dimensional, so you look like yourself at your best. The right light gives an image its shimmer, too, the life you can see in the color and the highlights.
Most of what I have learned here since 2006 is simply how the light behaves in Belize: soft in the early morning, and then that fleeting quiet just before the sun drops, when everything turns to gold. I work with whatever the day gives me and shape it from there.
Intention
Considered, down to your best side
I like things to be considered. If I am photographing you, I want to know the side you prefer and the angle you feel best in, so I can favor it all day without you ever having to think about it. If it is your bouquet, I am finding its best angle before it is set down.
Much of what I do is a quiet kind of design. Before a moment happens, I am reading the light, the setting, and the way everything sits together, and arranging all of it around you, so the frame comes together on its own and the two of you can stay easy inside it. I want the details you chose to read clearly, the dress, the color of your flowers, the setting itself, so the photographs stay descriptive and true to what your day actually looked like.
The Day
Planned, and open to the day
Most of this begins long before your day does. I like to picture it all in advance: what your dress will look like, the flowers you have chosen, the people who matter most to you. I am always imagining what a moment could become, seeing the photograph before it is there to take. That planning is what lets me relax on the day and stay present with you.
And then there is everything no one can plan for: a bit of light that appears out of nowhere, an idea the place hands me, a small moment between you I never saw coming. Those are my favorite of all. The plan holds the day steady, and the surprises are the gifts laid on top.
In Closing
So that is how I see. The two of you present and at ease in your own day, and me right there in it with you. The place you chose, living inside every frame. Light giving the color, the shadow, and the shimmer. Everything considered, planned, and still open to whatever the day gives.
If that feels close to the way you would want your own day seen, I would love to hear what you are planning. The galleries are here whenever you would like to look, and you are welcome to reach me anytime.
